BUNYAN’S BEDFORDSHIRE – A Progress by Bicycle. Part 1 of 2 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is an LCC and Southwark CyclistsCyclists Event | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Journey from this world to that is which to come...... John Bunyan is not well known for cycling, more for his work Pilgrim’s Progress . Bunyan moved to Bedford in 1655 and became a gifted preacher much in demand by congregations in Bedford and the surrounding area. It was his work as a tinker and his preaching to congregations in the villages in and around Bedford that took him to the places that enabled him to conjure up the journey that Christian undertook. Without further delay, we set off to journey with Christian through the Wicker Gate, now owned by Railtrack and replaced with a ticket barrier which will allow us to Travel on to Bedford. We visit Bromham Bridge and its’ Mill, Stevington where Pilgrim lost his burden, we may stop to look down the sepulchure into which it fell, before we cross the Slough of Despond and onwards through the valley of the shadow of death, to emerge safely at Bunyan’s House Beautiful. We may meet Watchful, although Discretion, Prudence, Piety and Charity may be elsewhere.We’ll skip the Hill of Difficulty, only stopping to take in the view, before travelling through the valley of humiliation. We’ll end this part of the ride at Harlington where Bunyan was arrested for Preaching, and his arrest that subsequently led to the writing of the work. Some 37 miles, possible opt out at 19 miles. Not a fast ride although we will need to keep moving to finish by dusk. Bermondsey Square at 08.00., just behind this store: http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shoppingandservices/storelocator/store.htm?id=4820 Saturday 17th January.
